Ulysses For Mac Review10/23/2021
Review: Ulysses for iPad and Mac Mitch Wagner is a technology journalist who lives in San Diego with his wife, dog, and three cats. They don’t remember deciding to get quite so many animals.Writers faced with the horror of a blank page might at least be comforted if their writing app is Ulysses, because it's beautiful to behold. Maybe it’s the first time you hear of Inspire don’t worry. It’s Inspire the exact Ulysses alternative on Windows. So is there any equivalent on Windows to the Ulysses I’d tell you the answer is YES Hurray. However, Ulysses is currently designed just for Mac, iPad and iPhone, that is, you aren’t able to try it on Windows. It won't coach you through your draft the way some other apps for writers do. Many long-form and short-form writers alike will take to Ulysses easily, although it's not the app for you if you prefer a lot of hand-holding. It's available for Mac, iPhone, and iPad—don't be fooled by any knock-off versions you see for Windows.
Plus, Scrivener is available on not only macOS and iOS, but also Windows. For that kind of guidance, Scrivener, which is also an Editors' Choice, is a better app. Sure, it has plenty of tools for organizing your writing, but it doesn't tell you how to sort the various drafts of your novel, nor does it tell you that you need a title page, contents page, foreword, and so forth. Ulysses has a single Library that houses all of your documents. In this Ulysses App Review I ask the question, Is Ulysses the best word processor for Mac A professional Mac word processor, which aims to be the best.Ulysses doesn't offer a prescriptive experience. If you’re in the Mac-obsessed writers crowd, this app is ideal. It also automatically syncs files to Apple’s iCloud, so it’s heavily embedded in this entire ecosystem. The notion pleased me until she continued, ‘You know, no full stops and that kind of thing’. ‘Does this mean you’ll be writing like James Joyce’ an interested bystander asked when I redeemed the ULYSSES III app for my Mac. For that reason, I spend a fair amount of time in this review comparing them.Ciara ODowd. Markdown is a way to apply basic formatting to text without using menus and buttons. What Is Markdown? One of Ulysses' signature features is that it supports typing in Markdown language. It remains the industry standard for screenwriters and thus it's an Editors' Choice for that group. Its ideal for writers who prefer a minimal interface and total flexibility, rather than a lot of structure and hand-holding.PCMag recommends one more top pick among writing apps: Final Draft. Sometimes a finished, exported document doesn't render the way I thought it would, and I have a really difficult time troubleshooting. If you prefer Markdown or want to try it out, Ulysses is the best writing app to choose.Ulysses is now in version 18, and it's available for macOS, iPhone, and iPad. I also perpetually mess up the coding for hyperlinks. For example, in some apps, you need double rather than single asterisks to apply ** bold**. Personally, I find it frustrating because Markdown isn't as standardized as it should or could be. When you're finished writing and you export a file from Markdown to HTML, PDF, or any other commonly used format, the Markdown language translates cleanly into the proper stylings.Markdown isn't for everyone. Ulysses Review Software Before SubscribingThe first sync can take some time. Just be sure you're logged into the same Apple account on both devices for your files to sync. Now, a single subscription lets you use both the desktop and mobile versions. You won't get any new updates, however.Previously, you had to purchase the iOS and Mac apps separately, but that is no longer the case. You can get a 14-day free trial of the software before subscribing to it.If you previously purchased a copy of Ulysses for Mac or iOS before version 12, you still own the old software and it should work as it always has. It costs $4.99 per month, $10.99 for six months, or $39.99 per year. That said, the two apps couldn't look more different, with Ulysses going for the clean, unencumbered look and Scrivener putting its elaborate toolset before your very eyes. Two apps that are more targeted at professional screenwriters, Final Draft ($249.99) and Script Studio ($199.95) cost more than a three-year subscription to Ulysses.Several lightweight writing apps cost less, including iA Writer ($29.99 for Mac, $19.99 for Windows, and $8.99 for iPhone and iPad). Side-by-side, Scrivener is the more economical purchase. Tack on an additional $19.99 for the iOS app, and you're looking $70 all-in. Otherwise, you won't know how to access many of the app's capabilities, including the cheat sheet of Markdown characters, which surfaces by way of a keyboard shortcut. The other key differences are 1) Scrivener is available on Windows and 2) Ulysses is sold as a subscription. When you launch Ulysses for the first time, you had better set aside a good 15 minutes to read some of the tutorials. To be perfectly blunt, Ulysses has a lovely interface, and Scrivener is ugly. Those apps are more suitable for short-form writing than long-form, as they don't have tools for managing research notes or character sheets or ways to rearrange scenes or chapters on the fly.Put head-to-head with Scrivener, Ulysses offers a completely different experience. You quickly understand that you'll have a wealth of formatting tools at your disposal, because even the tutorial content uses two different serif typefaces. Menus and toolbars are not restrained in the least. That's the flip side of minimalism. With Scrivener, you get an interface that puts function over form. It lets you easily rearrange the pieces of your work by dragging and dropping them. Could you instead create one enormous file that is a single work? Yes, you could, although at that point you might as well use a word processor instead, as you aren't getting one of the major benefits of a writing app.See, the library has one huge benefit. Or you could have a film script, and within the script are acts, and within the acts are scenes. For example, you could have a book, and within the book are parts, and within the parts are chapters. A library is a visual list of the files you create, and files can be nested. Docker for mac tutorialsLet's say I'm writing a novel told from different characters' points of view. Filters are like tags (the language of writing apps is a little different from that of other productivity apps). Most writers' apps have a library, although a few distraction-free ones, such as iA Writer and Focused, do not.In addition to a library, Ulysses gives you filters for organizing your writing. There's no cutting and pasting. When you export the finished work, the pieces will be in the order that you arranged them. All other elements of your computer interface vanish. When you enter the Full Screen mode in Ulysses, you see only your active sheet on a dark background. That way, you focus on the words on the page and nothing else. You can view or hide this information panel at any time while writing. Many writing apps have some kind of focus mode, in which the composition window fills the entire screen and everything else disappears. From the library view, a little colored dot appears next to each sheet indicating its goal status when applicable. The panel that contains the goal-setting functions has a few more tools, such as a place to store notes, images, and keywords.
